The green-lipped mussel, also known as the "New Zealand mussel", is cultivated in designated breeding areas on the coast of New Zealand. Green-lipped mussel powder contains a high content of glycosaminoglycans (long-chain amino sugar compounds). These are also found in synovial fluid (synovial lubricant). Green-lipped mussel powder is therefore used for problems with tendons, joints and the musculoskeletal system. Kräuterland green-lipped mussel powder is a single feed that is approved for all animals.
- pure natural product without additives
- rich in omega-3 fatty acids
- rich in glycosaminoglycans
The active ingredient in the New Zealand green-lipped mussel is glucosaminoglycan. These are long-chain amino sugar compounds and fatty acid components that can have an anti-inflammatory effect. Preparations containing green-lipped mussel are therefore used to treat joint problems. Most joint problems are caused by cartilage degradation, which can ultimately lead to arthrosis. This occurs either as a result of pathological changes in the bone structure or as a result of age-related wear and tear.
For the production of high-quality food supplements and feed supplements, only the mussel meat is used to obtain a yellowish powder. There are very large price differences between the powders available on the market, which are due to differences in quality and different production processes.
The highest quality is achieved by processing the wholesome mussel meat with all of its valuable ingredients, including oils (omega fatty acids), directly into powder. This method is particularly laborious and is generally very expensive.
Green-lipped mussel extracts are cheaper. Here, the freeze-dried mussel meat is turned into powder using CO2 extraction. During this process, the product loses valuable fats, but these are not the only quality feature of the green-lipped mussel and are not responsible for the alleged effectiveness on joints. This is more due to the GAGs, which remain in the powder in both production methods.
It is considered inferior quality if the entire mussel including the shell is ground or if the extraction is carried out using a solvent. You can recognize poor quality by its light gray color. In contrast, high-quality qualities are intensely yellow and smell strongly of the "sea."
Of course, only mussel meat is used for our quality.
