Allergic Cough in Horses
In horses that have a chronic cough, there is usually an allergic cause involved. Horses with sensitive airways can develop an allergic cough to certain environmental factors. In combination with an already weakened immune system, triggers of allergic cough in the horse's environment, such as hay dust, mold spores in hay feed or ammonia gases in inadequately cleaned and ventilated stables, have an easy time. Treatment of allergic cough consists first and foremost in optimizing the conditions in which the horses are kept.
Typical signs of allergy-related respiratory disease in horses include, in addition to reduced performance, shortness of breath, chronic coughing (often only once or twice when trotting) and only occasional nasal discharge. In this case, the weakening of the immune system caused by the change of coat is sufficient. This can be counteracted with a high-quality supply of vital substances (vitamins, herbs).
Preventive measures for allergic cough
- low-dust conditions - only feed wet hay of good quality
- lots of exercise in the fresh air, grazing
- Do not wait at the first signs of coughing, but react immediately
- Feed vital substances (herbs, vitamins) to support the immune system
Horses with respiratory problems should always be supported with bronchial herbal treatments for healthy breathing during the critical period.
In alternation with the respiratory treatment already available, we can now offer a second herbal treatment which can be used more intensively for allergic coughs, among other things.
