When feeding PSSM horses, the first step is to eliminate carbohydrates/sugars from the diet. This includes all types of grain, almost all types of muesli and mash, as well as carrots, apples, bread, bananas and beet pulp.
So no matter what we want to feed our PSSM horse: it should contain no or very, very little protein and no sugar at all. Feeding haylage or silage is also not recommended.
Hay, hay and more hay! 24 hours of free access. There should be no breaks in feeding for a horse with problems with muscle metabolism. To cover a higher energy requirement, you can feed additional camelina oil, for example. Camelina oil supports cell metabolism and prevents inflammation. This oil provides natural vitamin E (4x more than linseed oil), among other things.
Good hay is half the battle, as the saying goes.
Since this is a metabolic disease, herbs are ideal for a healthy and strong metabolism.
It is not so easy to put together an effective mixture here, since many herbs are taboo for PSSM sufferers.
A good approach is to use peppermint, dandelion (containing inulin), caraway, yarrow, birch, milk thistle and hawthorn, rounded off with knotweed
It supports the liver, kidneys and digestion.
These chromium-rich foods and herbs should be avoided or only fed in small quantities:
Wheat germ, molasses, spirulina and chlorella, carob, beetroot, buckwheat, corn, cress, fenugreek, nettle, shepherd's purse, blueberry leaves, artichokes, barley, brewer's yeast, etc.
