The metabolic disease EMS is a disease in horses that is becoming more and more common. This disease was already known in the past, but it was difficult to diagnose. Often, the only symptom that was recognized was the laminitis that followed. Metabolic syndrome is a metabolic problem with the sugar and energy balance that can arise from incorrect feeding and too little exercise. Typical signs include fat deposits, particularly in places like the horse's neck, shoulders, and fat pads next to the base of the tail on the croup. The blood sugar level is elevated, creating insulin resistance and laminitis.
Additional signs may also include reduced willingness to perform, susceptibility to infections, fertility problems and poor muscle tone.
It is apparently not possible to treat EMS with medication. Since lack of exercise and overeating are the main reasons for the development of EMS, only a consistent change in feeding and more intensive exercise will help in the long term.
Therapy can lower the blood sugar level. It is therefore very important to drastically reduce the amount of sugar and starch in the feed, ie avoid muesli and ready-made feed mixtures containing molasses and limit or even eliminate concentrated feed. You should also avoid carrots, bananas and apples.
Our herbal mixture for obesity contains specific herbs that support the function of fat metabolism and insulin balance.
This diet can be fed for at least 6 weeks at a time. After that, you can switch to the normal metabolic diet.
